Steamed Farra

Farra is a traditional Indian snack dish. While in some places it is made with a filling of cooked urad dal or chana dal, many people make it without a filling. It tastes good either ways.

My kids and husband are rice lovers. So, a lot of times I have left over steamed rice at home. That transforms to farra for breakfast the next day. It’s quick to make, healthy and filling.

Steamed rice and rice flour are mashed together with some salt. Give it an elliptical shape and steam these. You can steam these beforehand and temper just before serving. Traditionally the tempering is made with sesame seeds. That gives it a crunch. I also add some chopped curry leaves for extra taste.

Ingredients:

Leftover Steamed Rice - 1 cup (should be cold)
Rice Flour - 2 tbsp
Salt

For tempering
Oil - 1 tbsp
Sesame Seeds - 1 tbsp
Curry leaves - 8-9 chopped

Method:

1. In a bowl mash the steamed rice. Add rice flour and salt and mash well.
2. Give it an elliptical shape.
3. Oil the vessel to be used for steaming and place the farras in it. Steam for 7-8 mins.
4. In a pan heat oil. Add sesame seeds. Once it starts spluttering add chopped curry leaves.
5. Put in the prepared farras and mix well.
6. Serve hot with chutney of your choice.
